Madras Boat Club

Way back in 1867 a group of few Englishmen founded coat club in Madras(Chennai).  If you go and visit boat club office at Chennai, archives pictures gallery shows the usage of backwaters of Ennore. It was first rowing facilities started by Englishmen. currently Madras Boat Club is located in Chennai and it has many affiliated members. In 1892 club was shifted to Adyar river for rowing.  At present Chennai boat club has 27 affiliate members in India and 8 affiliate members outside India.

In 1977 with the efforts of members of madras boat club, Rowing Federation of India was established and first national rowing championship was held at Kolkata. After that there are several events was organised at different locations. In 1982 rowing was first introduced i Asian Games. In 1983 Indian rowers took part in world Rowing championship.  since 90's club has been witnessed remarkable changes such as modernization of club facilities, acquired boats from USA etc.
